This little gem was painted after Mayer’s return from Florence in 1936 and before he was awarded a Medal of Honour for Painting by the SA Akademie in 1943.
His work reflects an intense South African character, of which this watercolour of a rural scene is excellent proof.
The colours are beautifully preserved as the painting has never been exposed to sunlight.
It was only framed a year ago and is still being kept wrapped and stored.
